Talk About Raine's Voice Here, Kay thanks.

If your reading this after Feb 14 then you missed out on the old video. But here's a new one that makes the same point.

Can Raine Maida still sing like he used to? Yes he can!

DUDE!

Awesome video! I've subbed and favorited. You're absolutely right that he sings just like the 2001 recording at the end of the 2009 performance. But I wanted to add that even in the 2001 performance, you can hear it in his voice just how HARD it is to sing that song... goddamn it, it must have absolutely floored his vocal cords singing like that all those years... I can understand why he's been lacking lately indeed. But I think that he is gonna shock us all this tour, and really come through on the performances. After all, they are going to be professionally recorded, so he HAS to at least try.

By the way, if you want to you can request that video to be a video response to my video about Raine's vocal evolution... it might help you get more views, mine already has about 5,000 views.

Don't think that would help much. Most of us would still end up discussing it in *insert topic* since it's one of the topics discussion can easily lead to.

Anyway, good ears. This is what I've thought for awhile now... He can sing that way if he wants, he just doesn't for whatever reason.

I don't see why some people get upset when we talk about Raine's voice. It used to be the best reason to listen to OLP, and recently it's been less impressive. With the tour coming up where Raine will be singing entirely songs from the pre-Gravity era, discussion about it is bound to be plentiful.

My analysis:

If you look closely at the second clip there appears to be a second vocalist in the grassy right wing of the stage.

And Steve's hair looks completely different in the 2001 clip.

In the newer one he completely skipped out on the hard falsetto, though.

All I want is for him to sing an octave higher than he does these days. Back to the older, higher sound. Can his voice not do it anymore?

I hope it can.

I concur.
“Music doesn’t have the power to change the world. What music does is it changes people, & that changes the world, so to say that music doesn’t change people anymore is just ridiculous. It does everyday. It doesn’t have to be on a political or social level. You could be feeling shitty & it makes you happy & if that’s all it does, it’s changing the world. It’s making it a better place.” ~ Raine Maida

I don't really see how discussing a key part of the band's sound is "pitiful."

"Raine doesn't sing the song the same way he did 10 years ago." Well no shit. It's pretty obvious that technique wasn't his thing, so of course it took a toll on his voice. On top of that making a video to call him lazy is just disrespectful. If you think he sounds lazy, send him an email and ask why the change in his voice and style.

I think the main point of DG's video was to point out that Raine CAN sing the way he did, not that he "doesn't sing the way he did 10 years ago."

Also, I'd be a little surprised if he singing style took that much of a toll. From what I remember reading awhile back, he was going to a vocal instructor to be able to sing the way he did while following proper technique to avoid damaging his vocals. I might be wrong on that, but I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere on the CM. Obviously it would take some toll, but I'm thinking if he was going about it the proper way as it seems, I don't think it would call for that drastic of a change.

Perhaps, but if he had damaged his voice previous to seeing the vocal instructor, he or she might of told him not to push his voice to hard so as to not risk damaging it beyond repair. Back when Leslie Feist sang in a punk band, she damaged her voice so significantly that her vocal coach told her she couldn't afford to push her voice like that again. For those of you who are familiar with Feist, this is why she sings so softly. She still can sing like she did, but she doesn't very often for fear of damaging it further.

Regardless, this topic has been done to death so this will be my only contribution.

wow... it's amazing how much of you spend analyzing raine's voice and how it has changed in 20 years just like everyone else's does. but hey, if you want to keep criticizing instead of listening to the music for what it is for, go for it.
