I'd argue that OLP's back catalog is far more depressing/emo than Burn Burn.

Compare this: "As the world explodes we fall out of it, but we can't let go because this will not go away... there's a house built out in space"

(which is basically a perfect metaphorical way of saying that life sucks and then you die and the afterlife is just a wishful myth)

to this: "You looked at me as you walked in the room, like a Red Sea you split me open, somehow knew these wings were stolen, all you did was save my life".

Basically it almost seems like much of their older lyrics criticized Christianity while the newer ones seem to almost cross into Christian Rock territory (there was a video of AYD on Youtube where the uploader was a pastor and he thought it was a specifically Christian song)

In AYD there is also the part
"The devil's gone underground"
However i don't think that Burn Burn is a Christianity Rock album...

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I respect everyone's opinion on here...but heres my take...

It bothers me soo much when i hear people say that OLP's lyrics have gotten too mainstream, or too "mushy" or now the new one " Christian rock'.
What i respect so much about the band is they don't really care what everyone thinks about them. Raine writes about what is on his mind, whether it's meaningful to us or not, it's what he and the band feels is important, and that's all that matters. No band can stay the same, they need to grow, they need to try new styles or new lyrics it keeps things fresh. Some stuff may be amazing and some stuff might not be so great. But I respect and admire them for trying new things.
It just shows the maturity of the band.
Now this whole Christian rock thing... I personally don't think it is but if it was then so be it...it doesn't mean the music is bad just because the song may or may not be about God. Raine has ALWAYS used God in the songs, whether it be confusion or anger or whatever...it's really nothing new.
I have always ( for 10 years) respected OLP because they are real and they are themselves, and that is something we really dont see much of in bands these days.

I don't think he's calling them Christian Rock, he's just saying it could be mistaken for it.

And my gripe about lyrics is how Raine can write some awesome lyrics (although there were a few "what the hell" ones) for his solo, and turn around and write the kind of songs that he had on Burn Burn. I understand that OLP and his solo work are two completely different things, but it feels like he's putting so much more effort into his solo work and keeping OLP on the backburner.

Totally, it's still growing on me!

I remember that when I bought the album I had already downloaded it and listened to it a few times. I remember I didn't like it... I thought it was blah. I thought it was too light and very few tunes caught my attention.

When I was back in Toronto in August I went to an HMV and decided to pickup the limited edition version even considering I didn't like the album too much. I had only given it a few spins, but still, my impressions weren't too good. So this salesman over at the Eaton Centre HMV sees me picking up Burn Burn and he says he was really enjoying it that it was a great album. And I put up a fake smile and said nodded.

Even still in Toronto I put it in my iPod and started to REALLY enjoy the album. No doubt that this is their best album since Steve joined the band. I don't care if it's a bit too light but it's a damn good album... and definately grew on me. Now I agree with the HMV salesman.

Just one last comment...
Timebomb and The Right Stuff should have made the regular version of the album, not only the limited edition. They're very good tracks.

When the album inititally came out, I was pretty excited about it. Now that I've calmed down a bit and I've seen them perform songs from Burn Burn in a live setting, I think my opinion has changed a little bit. I like the album, that's for sure. The past three albums are obviously a lot less eccentric than the earlier albums, and I'm not totally upset by that. However, I don't really listen to AYDWSML anymore because I find it utterly boring and lacking of inspirational lyrical substance. For the longest time I felt the same about Innocent, but even Innocent gets me moving more than AYDWSML and I can at least find a little hope in the band's original intention knowing that the original title of that song was Arrogant (so even Innocent might have at once had an impactful meaning at one point). After realizing that they had planned to use The Right Stuff as the first single and even shot a video for it, I was shocked that they would go ahead and decide to use AYDWSML as the first single, because it's really not a good representation of the album at whole. I actually feel that it's the worst song on the album, or even possibly their worst song ever. On the other hand, some of the songs that came out of those sessions such as Time Bomb, The Right Stuff, Escape Artist, Refuge and Signs of Life are great little songs. Escape Artist really hits me every time and The Right Stuff evokes really strong feelings for me. Raine's vocals are a little subdued across the album for my taste, and I really wonder how he's going to sing Spiritual Machines songs on this tour. It seems to me that SM has notes that he would only dream of hitting now, especially after watching the live performances on the Burn Burn Burn DVD. Hmmm, cliche lyrics, clich emotions. The album sort of falls at a 2.5/5 or so for me, I guess.

Personally, I think that honour belongs to AYDWSML, Monkey Brains and The End Is Where We Begin. I actually cut the bridge out of Monkey Brains and made it into its own track with an intro of rain falling. It works as a great segue.

I don't see what everyone's problem is with Monkey Brains now, at first everyone loved it now everyone hates it. I still love it great lyrics and gotta love the guitar and bass in it.
