Grown on you?

Postby Gadmo » 9/25/2009, 11:21 pm

So, when Burn Burn first came out, it got a generally positive response but there was still a bunch of criticism... I was wondering, now that some time has past, if any sentiment of the album has changed? Has the album grown on anyone?

For me, it's substantial. I liked the album; AYDWSML and Monkey Brains hit me right away, but as I continue to listen to the album, it's grown on me immensely and I like it more and more... I've had similar experiences with OLP albums in the past, especially when Clumsy first came out, considering how different it was from Naveed.

I'm wondering if anyone else on the board is experiencing this also.
Have you experienced it with any other OLP albums - where at first listen it's only okay, but within a few months you think the album is great?

Just curious - thought it might make for an interesting thread...

I think people have probably had the opposite reaction to their albums.

Not really. I've tried a few times to get into it but can't. Some songs have fallen since my first few listens and others have grown from "Wow I don't want to listen to this" to "Meh, it's kind of a guilty pleasure but I'll rarely listen."

It grew on me I guess...I liked it better the 2nd and 3rd time I listened to it. But I don't think I like it better now since then - still like it though.

I think it sucks. I appreciate the effort to try out a different sound, but it should have been left off.

Escape Artist and White Flags grew on me, I hated them at first.

I'll only skip around 3 songs.

When you guys started talking about Signs of Life, I went "wait, that's the name of an OLP song?"
...whoops.

I find almost as a rule albums always grow on me. Very rarely will the opposite happen or will I like them a consistent amount from first listen on.

I still really like Signs of Life, Paper Moon, Escape Artist, and Monkey Brains. Refuge feels like this album's Apology--everyone I know seems to really come to love it, but while I don't dislike it, I've yet to fall in love.

Still really don't like Never Get Over You, Dreamland, or White Flags. AYD is fine, and I really like the bridge. And I like The End etc., I'm just still really disappointed by how the opening--which I really loved in the preview clip--never really went anywhere amazing like I'd expected.

Summary: the album hasn't really grown on me. I still love the four songs I loved, but the rest haven't exceeded "fine" status for me. Disappointing.
I just wanna get out,
Stuck inside of this.

I always listen to the first 6 songs, then skip to Paper Moon and that's it. But I've switched out "The End Is Where We Begin" with "The Right Stuff" in the tracklist, because that's how it was originally supposed to be layed out. So... these are the songs I listen to consistently:

1. AYD
2. Dreamland
3. Monkey Brains
4. The Right Stuff
5. Escape Artist
6. Refuge
7. Paper Moon

I've grown to pretty much enjoy all of these pretty decently. The rest, not so much.

I still find it to be slow, depressing emo rock.

It may be slow and even depressing but it sure ain't emo. If "depressing" and "emotional" are how we categorize emo music then basically every band ever would make the cut.

I'd argue that OLP's back catalog is far more depressing/emo than Burn Burn.

Compare this: "As the world explodes we fall out of it, but we can't let go because this will not go away... there's a house built out in space"

(which is basically a perfect metaphorical way of saying that life sucks and then you die and the afterlife is just a wishful myth)

to this: "You looked at me as you walked in the room, like a Red Sea you split me open, somehow knew these wings were stolen, all you did was save my life".

Basically it almost seems like much of their older lyrics criticized Christianity while the newer ones seem to almost cross into Christian Rock territory (there was a video of AYD on Youtube where the uploader was a pastor and he thought it was a specifically Christian song)

Well, OLP's older work is darker but the music is more energetic and and up-tempo. Burn Burn is more optimistic, but most of it is slower and gives it a more depressing sound.

I wouldn't say crossed into christianity, their are some lyrics on Burn Burn that still seem to criticize Christianity
