The Band Needs to read this RE: Rockband songs :)

Harmonix and XNA Creators Club allowing anyone to upload their own music to sell as DLC; open beta starts in late August, initially 360-exclusive.

It's no secret that getting music into a big-time rhythm game can spark significant sales for aspiring and established artists. Until now, the biggest problem for those wanting to get in on the action was cracking the games' tightly controlled setlists. That looks to change soon, as MTV Games and Harmonix today announced Rock Band Network, a program that lets bands prepare and release their own tracks for sale as downloadable content in the game.

A group of XNA Creators Club members celebrates getting their song in Rock Band.

Beginning later this year, anyone with a song, some technical know-how, and an XNA Creators Club membership will have a shot at selling their Rock Band tracks to the masses and walk away with a cut of the proceeds. Using the Reaper Digital Audio Workstation program (available for $225), musicians will be able to take their master-track recordings and add note charts for each instrument.

Once the note tracks are in place, users will be able to upload it to the Rock Band Network Web site as part of the Xbox 360's XNA Creators Club, which has a $49.99 four-month membership or $99.99 annual membership. There the track will go through peer review from other Creators Club members. After earning approval from that community, the song will go up on the Rock Band downloadable song store. According to a Billboard Online report, musicians will be able to price their songs between $.50 and $3 and will receive a 30 percent cut of the sales.

The tracks will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 versions of Rock Band for at least 30 days, but MTV Games has said some songs may find their way to the PlayStation 3 and Wii editions of the game. The publisher also has plans to help artists promote their songs on the service, but it isn't offering details on that just yet.

I was actually just about to post the same thing. Man it's been ages since I posted here. Anyways, I'm thinking most of Burn Burn would be amazing.

Monkey Brains though would be absolute full band AWESOME. As would anything OLP. I think they should go for it.

EDIT: Here's the full press release from the Rock Band forums

http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152225

EDIT 2:

http://www.rhythmauthors.com/index.php

This is a group that will chart songs for artists, they simply split the profit. But with a service like that I think the band (ok, or maybe just Rock Band playing OLP fans like me) would really be missing out if they chose not to get some stuff put in the game. It wouldn't even take the group too much extra work.

I would personally love any part of the OLP catalogue, even if I have to get re-records.

I think we'll see the end of days before we'll see OLP music on Rockband.

Yeah, I honestly think so too. But I would still like to hope. I mean, with this whole RBN service and other people willing to author the charts then that does pretty much leave it up to the band.

The thing about OLP compared to a lot of groups that ARE in the game is that OLP is the type of band the game's all about.

A Vocalist, A bass, a guitar, and a drummer

I mean yeah, they use a little more than that but they prioritize the RB fundamentals

I just wanted to bump this since there is a lot more info on the service now, including the tools available. In addition to a beta where people can attempt to chart their own songs and such.

It appears as though HMX doesn't plan on releasing OLP as regular DLC any time soon (Though I would LOVE to be surprised one Friday afternoon)

So I, as a fan, would REALLY like the band to look into this.

I want the band to at least think of this from the perspective that I do:

It is not compromising the sincerity of the music. It's not about pretending you can play guitar, or drum, or sing, etc. To me it's another way of experiencing your music and interacting with it. That's why I enjoy it so much. I love nothing more than listening to my music, but at the same time. It would be odd to sit and JUST listen to music.

If I were listening to music pre-Rock Band, it would just be reading. Or taking a walk. With music on the background.

The games put music on the forefront and then give you something to do while you listen without taking your attention away from the music. In fact, it makes you focus on the music more.

I'm not (immediately) asking for the band's entire discography, just a few songs to satisfy some fans.

I don't think anyone could really look at the game and say "this is terrible" when they understand what it's really about. Contrary to what some may believe, most Rock Band players don't actually think they're making any real musical accomplishments. It's just for fun.

Edit: wanted to add some links

http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156832 that is a list of groups willing to do all the nitty gritty technical work involved in getting the songs functional in game. Meaning all the band would have to do is get the needed material to whatever group they choose. Some groups want a flat fee, others want to split profit. However the band so chooses to do things.

http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157235

The above link is a current PROSPECTIVE songlist, as you can see, there is a pretty decent number. I think OLP would easily be one of the bigger hits, in fact, they, along with The Tragically Hip and Matthew Good have been pretty strongly requested in the RB community, especially among Canadian users. There's a decent number of USA users requesting it as well

Good point DG, but perhaps with that TW didn't realize what was required for it to actually be made. So he was pointed to a group capable of making it, so it's up to what the guys are interested in I suppose.

but I would still like to think of it as a possibility, he didn't say never.
