All I know for sure is that I don't want to be associated with anything which would hurt an independent band like Our Lady Peace. I am quite sure Raine (I won't say "Raine Maida because you all know him so well...) must have known that allowing "Paper Moon" on the internet for an interview would mean it would leak.
I am an independent magazine editor who values the ability to self promote and create art. I don't know anyone in the band, but I would love to know what they have to say about all this.

I have not heard back from either Susan Marie (the writer) or the PR man. I just don't want to be seen as a hack or lousy media representative.

Maybe OLP planned it this way. lol.

Just keep me informed. I think this is creating more buzz and press for OLP and "Paper Moon" is such an inspirational song I think I will write about it.

I'll let you guys know what I come up with.

~ellen

uggghhhh... Stop back-peddling!!!

The song is out. It's done. Get over it. No one planned anything. I don't know who is mad at you, or why, but its because you tried to claim responsibility that you're associated with this leaked song. Sometimes you gotta leave well enough alone. I know you are just trying to do your job, but you are doing a pretty shitty job of it, I must say.

Yes, promoting a webzine is great and music is great... But what I noticed is that for all your talk about lovely inspirational independent artists what you really meant was: "I want the world to know Raine said we could play this song first."

Well congrats. You did that. But you also told "the world" that you guys FAIL at securing your site to release exclusives like this in the future. Great job. I guess that probably "hurt" those "independent artists".

Hum, so whats the best way to respond to this issue? Threaten your readers? I think so!!!
"If you are a real fan of Our Lady Peace please take the song down." Seriously?! gtfo.

Look, I'm not trying to represent the site or anyone else but myself. But you absolutely ARE coming across like a hack and a lousy media rep. Get your act together before coming after your readers and the fans of the bands you promote.

Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.

This song hits home for me personally in so many ways. I will write about them all. Probably for the next issue of Target Audience Magazine since we have been responsible for the release of this song. The youtube video came from an interview done here: http://www.targetaudiencemagazine.com/music.php5

Come listen to the 45 minute interview with Raine. I'll be "getting ready for the big parade"

http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/ ... 3015764602

It's like they obviously got someone of note on their program (and I don't know if I'd consider OLP that of note) and they're just glorifying this for all it's worth, and sucking Raine's dick along the way.

theo's got it straight.

if they're linking to it themselves and they're the copyright holders (band members) you don't have anything to worry about. Leave it up and don't worry. it'll get removed if there's a problem!

People do this all the time when a new single is aired and they post the radio rip on youtube before the actual single has been released. 99% of the time it is done by the fans with no malice intended - they're just wanting to spread one of their favourite bands music. If this is a breach of copyright then like said above is that the file will be reported and taken down. It doesn't have to be more than that - Strong Alibi hasn't stolen some demo tapes from the studio or posted tracks from a leaked copy of the album - he's posted something which was aired on the radio and was authorized by Raine and the band for public consumption. A lot more is being made of this than needs to be.

And for my two cents, I think it being on youtube has done more good than harm - I think it's made quite a few people who weren't previous psyched for the album down for buying it now. And the comments box is loaded in praise for it too. It's all good stuff towards the hopeful successful release of Burn, Burn come July 21st.

This is like me saying I own the rights to OLP's entire discography because I've played it on my iPod.

There's nothing to come up with.

It seems like you are more worried about traffic and recognition than protecting a copyrighted material. Obviously no one in the band is going to blame you guys for it leaking to YouTube. And if they did, they would care about taking it down from your site before anything.

And yeah, Paper Moon being on YouTube is really hurting an INDEPENDENT band like Our Lady Peace. I feel terrible, since they've only put out 6 albums, a Live CD, a Live DVD, and two greatest hits albums under a major record label in Sony. I feel awful for hurting an independent band like themselves, since they're really struggling to find a fan base because they are, well you know an independent band with only 10 major record label releases.

Yeah, it seems this lady might not even know OLP has already released 6 studio albums through Sony that have been wildly successful

So this woman has pretty much been creating accounts on anything that is OLP-related to spread the word that OLP FRONTMAN RAINE MAIDA ALLOWED THEM TO PLAY IT FIRST AND NOT ANYBODY ELSE EVER AT ANY TIME. Really? I didn't know that. I must have missed it when it was on the site, on here, on the Paper Moon YouTube video, on MySpace, and on Paper Moon's SongMeanings.net page. And I'm probably missing a few other posts out there.

This seems to be more about publicity for the site than worrying about harming OLP, when it in fact had the opposite effect.

All it's really doing is harming her publication's reputation, and it's certainly not the OP's fault.

People need to quit bitching about hurting OLP. If it wasn't for downloading, I wouldn't be into half the bands I am, and buying their albums.

Hey, I'm on that link! I commented on the song on songmeanings. Woo! *Cough.*

Ellen seems to be trying really hard to get her magazine some recognition, and is more concerned about the fact that she's going for promotion than actual copyright issues. As aforementioned.
