MUSKEGON -- Hawk Nelson's latest release was bound to sound a little different.

"You can always learn when you collaborate with people better than you," bassist Dan Biro said of the strategy for "Hawk Nelson Is My Friend."

Working for the first time with producer David Bendeth and songwriting sessions with other writers and musicians signaled a new approach for the band, which headlines Saturday's Rock the Coast event at Michigan's Adventure near Muskegon.

"Some of these people were gracious enough to give us a chance," Biro, 26, said.

Among the names brought in for co-writing meetings -- Our Lady Peace lead singer Raine Maida and pop artist-songwriter Richard Marx.

Not every song that emerged worked its way onto the CD. But a collaboration with Marx resulted in a song titled "One Little Miracle."

"He started playing this little pop chorus and kind of singing a melody, and we said, 'That's a killer,'" Biro recalled. "But we had to lower it three keys for (our lead singer) Jason (Dunn)."

The song speaks of coming together and inspiring others.

"It was a style that we never would have done on our own and is totally appropriate for AC (adult contemporary) radio -- something we're not known for," he said.

The CD's first single -- "Friend Like That" -- sounds like more traditional Hawk Nelson with its punkish leanings, and is influenced by long-time associate Trevor NcNevan. It topped Christian radio charts and sold 25,000 digital copies before the CD released April 1. Tunes such as "Not The Same" and the slower-tempo "Somebody Else," suggest a more pop-ish direction.

"This record is a lot more personal for us -- we're opening up a bit, which I'm coming to realize takes a little more time," Biro said of their third studio project.

Hawk Nelson (an imaginary videogame character created by band founder and lead singer Dunn) got its start during the players' high school days in Peterborough, Ontario. Their first national release came in 2004, scoring several surprise Christian radio hits.

A song from their follow-up release ("Bring 'Em Out") ended up in the feature film "Yours, Mine & Ours," with the band playing the tune in an on-camera role.

"Some people say that was our biggest 'break,'" Biro said. The song also was used by NBC to promote its NFL Sunday-night football broadcasts.

Hawk Nelson performed last year at Fifth Third Ballpark in a "Faith Night" pre-Whitecaps game concert event and the band is scheduled to return this season on July 28. Within the past year, the band also has broken in new drummer Justin Benner.

Biro said the band's best-known song is "Everything You Ever Wanted," with its lyric dealing with abandonment and forgiveness.

"It's the song that the most people sing along with at concerts," he said.

The band apparently has garnered a following among teen girls, too. It landed at No. 5 on "Cosmo Girl" magazine's Top 10 bands list.

Also on the bill:

Group 1 Crew -- Hip-hop/funk/soul trio that recently won a Dove Award for their debut album. Among their hit songs: "Love Is A Beautiful Thing."

Run Kid Run -- Illinois-based, four-piece pop-rock band that just released a new CD, "Love At The Core." Up-and-coming Christian rock hit, "Captives Come Home."

Rock the Coast revelers will find a new stage with even more music to mark its fifth annual year.

"The new twist this year is the Day Stage," said Kevin Newton, event coordinator for Alive on the Lakeshore, the nonprofit group that conducts the two-day event at Michigan's Adventure, north of Muskegon. The organization also sponsors August's popular Unity Christian Music Festival in Muskegon.

At noon Saturday, four local/regional music groups -- Secondhand, Good Luck Varsity, The Pete Cornelius Band and The Advent -- will hit the stage near the arcade-midway.

The stage also will be the site of an 11 a.m. Sunday worship service led again this year by area worship leader-artist Tommee Proffit. The worship time precedes opening of rides at noon.

Proceeds from the event are donated to two area teen ministries, Youth for Christ and First Priority.
