Aww, Kathy. :( *more hugs* That surgery sounds awful, but I'm sure it'll be so worth it when it's all over. I'm so sorry to hear you've lived with that pain for so long. And screw your co-workers. If they want to look down on someone just because they aren't perfect and aren't rich, they're not good people and you shouldn't care what they think. Know that you have people who care about you and don't judge you based on superficial crap, but on what matters. :)

It does sound awful Kathy, but think of the benefits you will get. You won't look like a jack-o-lantern, the gaps will close up quicker than you think. Everyone is different, you might be quick. As for the people who would say anything to you at work, fuck them. If they are so self-absorbed to not understand what you are growing through then I wouldn't care what they thought of me anyway. You're beatiful on the outside and the inside. They wouldn't even have the courage to do what you are, so fuck them. You're stronger than they are and don't need to worry about them. The only people that matter are your friends, family and loved ones, and if someone is going to say anything negative about what you'e going through they don't matter. If anyone does say anything to you simply, "Take a deep breath, give them the finger...head up high, walk like a winner. Let the bare feet be the last sound that they hear."

Oh and *hugs* You'll get through this.

Your health care should cover that. At least some of it.

aww Nikki ... your post made me cry, but good tears. You're so right. I'm sitting here worried about what my snobby coworkers are going to think when I should be taking care of myself and worrying only about the people close to me.

I think if I had more close family and friends it would be different... that would make it easier to go through things like this. Unfortunately my family is not close, and I've lost a lot of friends over the years for various reasons. Sometimes I feel very alone and my husband is trying very hard to fill the void.

The problem is I'm so self conscious I care what everyone in the whole world thinks of me... even if I don't know who they are! I know... it's stupid.

I've been researching my health coverage for the last month. The surgery costs are 95% covered by OHIP, leaving about $1,000-1,500 have to be covered by me. Thank goodness it's mostly covered or I wouldn't be able to even consider it. I'll then submit my portion to my health insurance and get a portion back. The extractions will cost $1500-2000, of which I'll get a portion back from my dental plan. The orthodontics are $6,500, for which I have no coverage (my plan has complete coverage for people under 18, no coverage for adults)

So my best estimate is that my out-of-pocket will be $8K - $10K, hopefully closer to 8K. This is money that I don't really have to spare considering I'm paying down $30K of student debt :(

Your dental plan should cover that. My sister has braces and my parents didn't pay anything.

Dentists are like.. free.

no, NO they aren't. Your family is evidentally on a dental plan, not everyone is that lucky.

Like Kathy said, the medical part will be covered, because we have universal healthcare here, but anything strictly dental has to be covered by a private dental plan or paid for out of your pocket.

This is why low-income people tend to have bad teeth, they can't afford regular checkups.

My family never had dental coverage growing up so I didn't see a dentist until I was a teenager. We were way too poor to go to the dentist. And for my issue the majority of the cost is orthodontics, which are not covered under most plans except for anyone under 18 years old. And even then there is a lifetime maximum. My ortho costs will be way over the maximum.

Someone suggested this so I'm writing to my dental and health care providers along with my HR department... not that I believe it will do any good, but I might as well try. Sure the orthodontics costs a lot.... But what would cost more over the next 5 to 10 years is my monthly prescriptions for painkillers, extra dental and health care needed for impacted teeth, wisdom teeth that cause pain and bleeding at least once a month, massage therapy that I go to for the associated pain in my head/neck/face, reduced productivity working in pain and on painkillers, time out of work for days when it's really bad, etc, etc,

Awww Kathy, that sucks so much. I spent part of my time with braces when I was about 17 with big gaps where two of my front teeth were taken out. I was lucky that I wasn't as self conscious back then - but you learn not to open your mouth quite as much. Still, the end result is worth all the hassle and now I barely remember it. Now I have similar issues with the massive scars I have from my last operation which are pretty much visible all the time - and I'm much more self consious nowthan i was back then. There are good days where you just say "fuck it, I don't care what people think of me" and bad days where you just curl up and cry because it gets to you so much, and then as time passes there'll be days where you don't think of it at all. It's not going to be easy, but you already know that. And if it means an end to your pain then it has to be worth it. *big hugs*

Some interesting facts for you:

"In some african tribes having a gap in your front teeth was a sign of wisdom."

Talking about Chaucer's Wife of Bath: "She's gap-toothed, a medieval sign that some believe had to do with sexual accomplishment, or with a bold, faithless nature, or with travelling."

Just tell that to anyone who has anything to say to you!!

Also, you know the CM will always be here for you. Just think of all that CMing you can do while you're off work after the operation :)

Finally, I can't believe that Canada doens't have free dental care for children. Ours is free up to the age of 18 (19 if you're still in full tijme education) or if you're pregnant, and maybe if you're over 60 as well. Otherwise you pay a lot!

Aww Sooz, thanks! It means a lot that you took time to share with me about what you went through and how you felt. And those interesting facts will definitely come in handy!

Someone told me today that regular dental checkups are (or were) covered for children in Canada up to a certain age. If that's the case then my parents had no excuse for not taking us to the dentist... now I'm curious and I want to look into it further because I really don't know the answer.

Not that it solves my current problem... but I still want to know!

now it's often associated with being poor (having no dental coverage) and never getting laid. My, how far we've come!
