Teaching

Postby Axtech » 6/2/2003, 2:00 pm

While considering what path I'd like to take in life, one option that has come up is teaching. If I chose to be a teacher, it would definately be high school. However, I have no idea what one goes through to become a teacher [in Ontario]. Does anyone here know?

I'm going into teaching but elementary not high school so I just need to get a BA in something (I'm getting it in ECE) then I go to teachers college.
For High school you'd need to have at least 2 teachable (i think), like a major in history and a minor in English or something like that. Which usually takes about 4 years in university. Then you'd have to go to teachers college for a year. in total it would be about 5 years.

What do you mean by "you'd need to have at least 2 teachable"? Like, what would I have to "have"?

you have to major and minor in something that you could teach. Like, Religion, Music, History, Art, Math, English etc...

I'm not sure I understand exactly how this works, so you'll have to bear with me. :P

So, I could take (for example) History as a major and English as a minor. Then, at the end of the roughly four years (once I'm ready to go to teacher's college) what would I have in those subjects? For example, a bachelor's? Master's?

heh, thanks.

I'll probably ask my History teacher about it tomorrow. He's a good guy, and started teaching only a few years ago.

I guess the next step is to figure out what I want to teach.

There are NO jobs for teachers in Ontario .. my best friend just went through 4 years of Uni, then a year of teachers college and could not find any job around Ontario. Hell in Canada for that matter! She just got offered a job teaching in the UK and her and her husband are now off to live in England for a year. She spent a good year trying to find a teaching job ..

My friend took 4 years of University .. something to do with Business/accounting .. and then just 1 year at teachers college and she's finished now.

That was a long time ago. Geez, get with the program. :freak:

I was also thinking psychology, but although I love psychology, there's just no careers in the field that intrest me enough.

I think forensic psychology would be cool...

Criminal justice just seems so cool.

Ya, I know it sucks right now, but in 4-5 years there should be a higher demand, I think or at least that's what I'm told.

I've considered that too.

I have no idea what I'm going to do yet. I'm not even sure about teaching, I'm just trying to feel out my options.

Criminal Psychology looks cool too, but I'm not sure about what jobs are available there, without going through police training and whatnot...

Probably .. but when you're a newly married couple on your own .. both still in school .. then you can't really afford to wait 4-5 years for a decent job to come along

Check into it.......could be interesting. I've actually considered going to the academy, just for the training. Could be a cop then
