Raine's ownership of OWS

Postby emlapal » 11/6/2011, 10:33 pm

Let me start by saying that I commend Raine for stepping up and writting an article about his support of OWS. He presents his support in a clear and concise manor, leaving no doubt that he believes what he preaches about. He's been to one or more of the protests and even involves his children. He's 100% behind this movement and therein lies the problem.

In doing so he has no choice but to support the good and the bad that come from the movement. Might he one day be able to look at the world and see it much closer to how he envisions it should be due to this movement and say 'I was a part of that'.
Sure...without a doubt he'd have that right. But along with that goes the responsibilty of owning all the bad that comes from it as well. I'm sure he has considered this and is more than willing to own up to that reality too.

So far there are reports of rape, theft, sexual assault, drug abuse, selling of illegal drugs not to mention how it has adversly affected families and small businesses in the close proximity to the protests. For the most part, things seem to going in the wrong direction as far as crime and lawlessness and even the mainstream, left wing media seems to be backing away from it's support of the movement.

Raine, like Obama, has thrown himself behind the cause, seemingly at all costs. Both may suffer from this decision in the long run; Raine in record sales, Obama in votes. Time will tell.

By the way, Wall Street is more profitable now than when Obama took office.

I don't think Raine is concerned with the record sales, nor what that the mass public thinks of what he stands for. His main concern is to voice the need for transparency and accountability. He's not forcing you to come along, just using his status to help inform, and voicing his own personal belief at the same time.

Exactly. As for record sales... The album has nothing to do with the movement. Fight the Good Fight was one song.... which was given away for free. If someone decides they no longer like Clumsy or they don't want to buy Album 8 based on Raine's beliefs about OWS than that is their loss, not the bands. You can't judge someone on one belief. Those who do are immature and small minded.

and yes, in the OpEd piece Raine wrote he has acknowledged that wrong is being done. He's obviously not supporting the violence and rape. That's not on him. He's not responsible for that. People are responsible for their own actions.
“Music doesn’t have the power to change the world. What music does is it changes people, & that changes the world, so to say that music doesn’t change people anymore is just ridiculous. It does everyday. It doesn’t have to be on a political or social level. You could be feeling shitty & it makes you happy & if that’s all it does, it’s changing the world. It’s making it a better place.” ~ Raine Maida

I embrace the OWS movement, but this statement is unfair. Would you buy music from a skinhead? What if it was REALLY good music? No? Even if the music had nothing to do with him being a skinhead? Personally, I would not. I wouldn't want to support a known skinhead regardless of the music.

I think it is perfectly legitimate to vote with your wallet. That doesn't make me immature and small minded.

Sorry... I used the term beliefs too generally. I'm referring simply to opinions such as OWS not extremes like skinheads, rapists, KKK members etc.... )I understand that different beliefs vary in importance depending on who you are... some may genuinely be as offended by their support of this as they would if they found out the band members were skin heads... Everyone is entitled to believe whatever they want.)

What I was trying to say is this: Say you didn't agree with the Occupy movement but you found out your best friend you've known 16 years did? Are you going to NOT be friends with them anymore simply because you disagree about it? Probably not.... so why should someone not give their favorite band the same consideration? Just agree to disagree.

I also a little baffled as to exactly why people are so surprised by the support. This didn't come from nowhere. The band, Raine especially, have been very political and considered themselves activists for years.
