Here is some information from the cbc/the hour site. I thought it would be helpful for the Canadian CMers...and remember that the government has pledged to match our donations as well, dollar for dollar!

How to Help in Haiti
The earthquake in Haiti has left untold devastation and death in its wake, and with several aftershocks overnight, the situation is only getting worse. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to get supplies in to the country - but money donated to the organizations on the ground will get to the people that need help right away. The federal government has also committed to give up to $50 million to match Canadians' donations to eligible charities aiding relief efforts in Haiti - so your contribution will count for twice as much. Here's the Frequently Asked Questions about the government's commitment to match your donations at the CIDA site.

If you'd like to donate by text, you now can in Canada. Text:

"Haiti" to 45678 to donate $5 to the Salvation Army in Canada (Bell/Rogers only, thanks to @townerson for the note)
"Haiti" to 85944 to donate $5 to Rescue Union Mission and MedCorp International
"Haiti" to 25383 to donate $5 to the International Rescue Committee
Thanks to Jonathan and Kari for letting us know texting 'Yele' still isn't working in Canada.

You can donate online to these organizations online, or find other contact information on their sites:

- Canadian Red Cross
- World Vision Canada
- UNICEF Canada
- Salvation Army in Canada
- Medecines Sans Frontieres Canada
- Wyclef Jean's Yele Foundation
- Humane Society International
- Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti

CBC News has a full list of charities and emergency contacts here. Foreign Affairs also has a list, and if you're not sure about a charity - or not sure if the government will match your donation - search for it here.

If you have friends or family in Haiti, our thoughts are with them and with you.

Please sign the petition to U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, to drop Haiti's debt. By doing so they can rebuild with grants instead of loans. ALl you have to do is sign your name. Please spread the word. Thanks. Here is direct link. They are trying to get 200,000 sigs

Kinda off track, but since its about Haiti I'm gonna go ahead and vent my opinion.

Celebrities fucking piss me off when it comes to events like what's happened in Haiti. Clooney puts together the big damn benefit. NFL has their players doing public service annoncements asking for money.

A. Fuckfaces. How about each of you douchebags pulling in the 7 figures each donate (and make public that you're doing so..) at least 100,000 to the cause.

B. Why don't you concentrate this type of energy on problems also in our country as well. The homeless. The elderly without healthcare. Etc.

Makes me ill... celebrities and their desire to get more attention because they give a shit. Stupid.

Kinda goes against your point about them going through shit like this for attention, doesn't it?

Although for some celebrities it is true that it's to feed the ego.

I'm saying go on the record and state, "I Cocksucker McDoogle am donating x,xxx, xxx of my own money toward the cause."

I'm just really annoyed.... celebs piss me off.

Yet they'd be the first ones to cry if Obama raises taxes on the wealthy. Douchebags.

I was thinking about this... and I don't totally disagree, but some points to ponder:

1) This could be just me, but I never broadcast my charity offerings. I do my share to sincerely help a cause and not for the attention it might garner. I don't even claim any of it in my taxes. I actually feel the exact opposite of you and hate it when a celebrity boasts about a donation dollar amount. I think it is attention whoring and bragging at its finest and has little to do with the charity. Not to mention, if they have a personal accountant or financial advisor (as they should), they know that they would be stupid not to be making donations for tax write-offs. I rather they be tight-lipped about their philanthropism.

2) Celebrities bring attention to the cause. Yeah, it's annoying and it is self-righteous, but in the end it helps raise money, so that's good right?

3) Maybe celebrities are encouraged NOT to endorse how much they have donated to the cause from their own pocket because it might discourage others to bother. For example, if Tom Brady says he gave $5,000,000 to help the Red Cross in a telethon, maybe Susie Homemaker will decide they don't need any of her money. I don't necessarily think that way, but others potentially do.

Just some stuff to chew on. I'll leave the raising taxes for the wealthy thing alone for now. :D

some have given money out of their pocket. Sandra Bullock gave 1million.. I heard a few others did as well.

I think the reason they use Celebs is to get people to give.. Sadly so, many people can not think on their own. If abc celeb gives then maybe they will do. ON the flipside I am not going to donate, buy or support anything just because you do..

Alot of celebs give. They give privately. They do not want to advertise LOOK AT ME> I AM A HUGE STAR AND GAVE SUCH AND SUCH.

for some it is for attention. For others it is because they truly can and care.. YOu be surprised to learn how many do donate and give their time and money without the fanfare.
