Ugh. They're teaching that crap in Canada, too? I thought that was an American thing.

It's good to lie and not prepare young people for the real world! :wall:

The only thing I will say on this subject it that adults feel if you teach a child or young person(teen) about SEX it means they will automatically go out and have it. I was at a huge AIDS Rally in DC in 1995. It was the last time they were able to put the QUILT over the great lawn. There were rallies all over the city. On Capital Hill there were people giving speeches. One young lady. She was 17 I believe gave this moving speech. I remember her saying that adults feel if you teacch us about sex-we will go have it. That is not true. While some of us are having sex. Others aren't. Still we needed to be educated on the dangers of possibly getting aids. NOw I have no children. I do however always say that I would tell my children they can talk to me about anything. While I rather not have my teen daugther having sex. I want her to be protected (emotionally and physically).. People think by not talking about these things kids won;'t do it.

Wake up folks. When I went to High School kids were drinking, smoking and having sex. They will do it whether or not you discuss this with them.I rather they be educated to help make them the decisions they need to make to live a healthy life..

As for AIDS. I have done voluteer work for a few AIDS charities for the past 25 years. It is the one thing I am serious and concerned about. AIDS does not discriminate.

As for Sex ED. I remember in 3rd grade they had the girls see one filme and counselour while the boys saw a different one. By 5th grade they were teaching you about your body and what to expect.. By the time I was in my first year of high school they were teaching us how to use condoms and protect ourselves. ALthough AIDS was not really an issue back them. VD was the big disease back then..

It is better to be educated. BTW Sex before marrage does mean you will become sucidial and depressed. That is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard in my life. Talk about trying to scare a kid.

I feel love, I feel a power. It comes to me in the darkest hour. And I want to feel it again

there are new statistics emerging that in the US, teens who have taken those chastity pledges are equally likely to experiment with sex as those who do not, but are far more likely to not use protection (I used to have the exact figures, forgot where I put them).

There is also an increase in teenage girls engaging in anal sex because they believe it protects their virginity. the recently coined term for this is saddlebacking. the problem with that is that anal sex requires more sexual know-how than regular sex, and the resulting damage of improper anal can be very very unpleasant and long-lasting. not to mention that because schools generally do not teach anything about anal sex, young straight couples seem to be operating under the belief that because you cannot get pregnant, condoms are unnecessary. it's being predicted that the incidences of hiv/aids in young women is going to skyrocket shortly because of this ignorance. syphilis, which has been in decline, is also making a comeback; what's worse, now there are treatment-resistant strains that seem to be spreading very quickly (cases are up something like 4% in Ontario after decades of decline). the only way to protect the safety of young people is to educate them, and to provide them with access to birth control, condoms, and vaccines (the current argument against the HPV vaccine becoming mandatory for girls in high school is that it will encourage them to have sex).

Megan, my school is just a public school. However, most of my village is Catholic, and there are only about five to ten people in the entire school that aren't Christian. Actually, our principal is Catholic, and there are catechism lessons for those who wish to take it. I think it's grades one to six, on the last class of the day on Tuesday.

What really frustrated me was that this lady was telling us that if we and our partner practice chastity and wait for marriage, then there's a guarantee that you won't get any sexually transmitted viruses or diseases. I don't know about you, but the last time I checked, you could get HIV/AIDS from other things, not just sex.

That was me  I'm Claire, Shanae, nice to meet you.

A public school, eh? I mean, in a religious school context there's an excuse - sounds like your school is pretty borderline though (Catholic in all but name).

I went to Catholic schools, and was fairly lucky to have some liberal, forward-thinking, sex-positive teachers. The rest were pretty much what you'd expect of a religious school.

You make a good point; and a lot of people who have gotten AIDS from tainted blood, contaminated needles, or what have you suffer the same discrimination of those who got AIDS through sexual activity. It is a disease where often the carrier is blamed for having it, or the culture for promoting it.

And thanks for splitting the topic Matt.

Lovely to meet you, too, Claire. :)

We have some cool teachers, too, but some of them are pretty... typical. Our English teacher is a five foot three -ish bald guy that also teaches us gym and used to coach me hockey. He has the BEST English classes ever.

I just knew that almost everyone else in my class was lapping it up and it made me feel a little bad that they were believing everything. I was talking to a few people about it afterwards and they didn't agree with me at all. They said they doubted that they'd have sex before marriage (they'll break their "chastity pledge," I just know it.) It's not like chastity is entirely bad news bears. The lady was just trying to put her perspective about what's "best for us" into gear. The way she preached and preached about it, though, wasn't helping me at all, and the way she presented the information was horrible.

He can reach the board. It's awesome, because I'm taller than him.
