Were they named after Nikola Tesla? He's probably one of the greatest inventors/minds in history!

Why the Name "Tesla"?

The namesake of our company is the genius Nikola Tesla, an inventor, electrical engineer, and scientist. Among his life's many inventions (and more than 700 patents) are the induction motor and alternating-current power transmission. Without Tesla‘s vision and brilliance, our car wouldn't be possible. We're confident that if he were alive today, Nikola Tesla would look over our 100 percent electric car and nod his head with both understanding and approval.
A Bright Moment to Honor the Man Who Lit the World

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has declared 2006 the Year of Nikola Tesla, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of his birth. We are delighted that the world unveiling of the Tesla Roadster fell on July 19, 2006 — just days after his birthday.

“Were we to seize and eliminate from our industrial world the result of Mr. Tesla‘s work, the wheels of industry would cease to turn, our electric cars and trains would stop, our towns would be dark, and our mills would be idle and dead. His name marks an epoch in the advance of electrical science.”

— B. Behrend, Vice President of the Institute of Electrical Engineers

btw.. the website is here: www.teslamotors.com
from what i understand, theyre going to expand from the roadster to all forms of cars eventually

Ummm, Knight Rider? Geez Sand, surely even you can remember Knight Rider. I wish I was driving KITT to work, I'd be turbo boosting over traffic all the time.

Yea it's a Malibu and if the reduced power emissions kill me then I wont have any kids to live in the wonderful future.

As they say: Earth First! ... We'll strip mine the ohter planets later.

reduced emissions does not necessarily have to result in reduced power or fun

hell F1 is moving towards technologies that reduce the amount of fuel they consume and are legitimately trying to use various technologies to both increase the amount of power while maintaining a greener environmental stance

I agree but in the case of this Malibu it's reduced power will come as a higher danger to the enviroment.

I can't merge onto the interstate worth crap. This can result in a nasty crash resulting in oil, antifreeze, r-134, and other dangerous chemicals spilling onto the earth.

the problem with that argument is that everyone who drives a car in cali has to adhere to those very same rules so its not just your car that would have that problem and as such, its more the drivers themselves then the cars or the laws...
obviously if it was just your car having difficulties then it'd be a different thing but its not.. its everyone.. plus rentals tend to not have very good pickup given theyre driven with no care for the long term effects to the car (like one would drive their own car) so that'd also add to the situation but it still doesnt mean that cali's laws are at fault

It's not an even playing field.
The cars doing 65+ on the freeway are already doing that speed.

It's my car (And others trying to merge onto the freeway) that are in danger becuase we need to go from 20 to 75 in a short span to merge in properly with traffic. When you hit the gas and nothing happens you end up merging in @ maybe 45 - 50.

So a shitty rental car + shitty emission laws = Death to me.

I'd be much safer in either of my 2 cars.

Screw the enviroment if I'm putting out 2.85% more emissions than a similar car in Cali.

Emissions from cars make up a minute amount of the big picture anyways.

I'm going to split this topic and move the emissions discussion down to a more appropriate forum.
