my best friend used gum... she chewed a pack or two a day! :lol:

Also, if she was home and wanted a smoke she brushed her teeth, cuz she always hated having a smoke with freshly brushed teeth. Doing that bought some time until the craving came back.

i've heard lollipops, but the gum idea sounds good. get it sugarfree and it'll double as a way to clean teeth stained by smoking.

wanting a smoke just by knowing you have the ability to get hold of them sounds a lot like me and ...well, all the ways i procrastinate. you HAVE to get rid of the ones you've got or you'll think, "eh, i'll treat myself, a small break" and you're a goner. i wouldn't know anything about what it feels like to be a smoker though, and i'm sure distracting myself from homework can't compare :lol: but...that's my piece.

my dad quit by eating a crapload of oranges.

also, question(s): do i have any business asking my bf to quit? and if so, how the hell do i approach it? and if not, what IS appropriate to say to him? (i hate that he smokes, so much. mostly for his health.)

you can point out that smoking is detrimental to his health... and that it's a win win situation in the long run if he quits.

i have no idea how i would approach him in going about saying that.

steal all her smokes and throw them away! thats what i always did with my dad when he did tobacco! and he eventually stopped cause he couldn't win!

yes in general in agree with Lando. But if it was a bf I'd have a problem with it. Now, I wouldn't have gotten myself into the situation in the first place, but if I had, I would definitely try to get him to stop.

just get the patch.

seriously, why make it harder than it already is? the patch eliminates one of the two biggest obstacles in quitting smoking - the cravings. now all you have to do is deal with the habit.

i start the patch as soon as i'm done this smoke.

okay a) he became a habitual smoker AFTER we started.. being involved.. and b) he's actually done things like getting out of bed in the middle of the night to go outside for a cig.

problem is that most smokers, deep down, love cigarettes as though they were their best pals, so it's hard to not feel resentful when someone asks you to quit

that's not to say you can't ask, but it's the type of thing where he has to really want to end the love affair first

Okay so a guy I work with came up with this way to quit in 24 days.

You pick a time to start at. Say you have your first cigarette normally at 8am.

So the first day you smoke as usual. The next day, you have to wait until 9am to have a cigarette, but after that you can smoke all you want.

The next day you have to wait until 10am.
The next day you have to wait until 11am.

etc.

I don't know if it worked, but I haven't seen him going out to smoke a lot anymore, I haven't heard him say if he actually quit or not but hey it's worth a try :)
