Canadian women sought in Mexico luxury resort killing

Postby Kathy » 3/1/2006, 12:52 pm

First the Mexican authorities, and I use that term loosely, said this looked like a professional hit because of the way the couple was killed. So there were stories that the victims had mob ties (note that they are Italian). Then we were told that two large, burly Canadian women were the prime suspects and they have now returned to Canada. Then there's a third suspect announced, then someone else in the investigator's office says "no, there is no third suspect". Now we see the two young Canadian mothers who are terrified that their names (or names that are very similar) are being splashed all over Mexican media, and the authorities say they will seek extradition to bring the women back to Mexico.

This is unbefrigginlievable.

My dad's boss was staying at that resort (or the one next to it) when this happened.

I've heard people are saying that they think it's mafia-related. Apparently one (or both?) of the victims owned a really big house that he paid for in cash, and it's on a street of houses owned strctly by people in his family.

If you venture so much as 5 miles out of the "trendy" Cancun tourist area, your in some real trouble. just about a year or so ago, right before spring break, they found 5 bodies on the skirts of cancun killed execution style. Drug crimes are not as common in the area, but i believe that the drug plot "up for grabs" includes Cancun. This is classic police corruption though. They may have had a hand in it or are on the payroll and covering up for someone.

So is this big news in Canada? cause honestly, people down here by the border get kidnapped, and killed daily.

I think the issue is that no one believes the Mexican authorities who are known to be corrupt. They would not want to risk damaging their reputation for fear that it will hurt tourism (i.e. if people don't feel safe at their resorts), which was already hurt by the hurricanes last year... so the thought is that they will say anything to deflect the story. They came out with various stories before they had even investigated, and each spokesperson's story conflicted with the one before. So... it's been messy from the start.

No. But it I bet it was news to the two accused women when their names showed up all over international news... (assuming they're innocent, which seems likely)

There have been so many conflicting reports and conference cancellings that I find it hard to trust the Mexican authorities. They were also alittle too quick with jumping to Canadian suspects. There is for sure something fishy about this situation. Unfortunately... some celebrity scandal will emerge and eclipse this news story, we'll probably never know the truth.

the federales were probably covering for one organization, and the locals were probably covering for another. then the tourism folks have their own people covering for them. either way, about 50-75% of the officials down there are on someone's payroll.
