Fair enough, but what about for the quality of life for human beings?

In situation 1 I actually sympathise with Schapelle. But she is not at the heart of this. It's those who deem that the Australian's should have been arrested on Australian soil rather than tipping off the Indonesians.

in the first scenario, I don't think much can be said. There's laws. People should follow them. If they don't, they get punished. Simple as that.
I think no matter where you are you get people who get in an uproar over progress (i'm talking about scenario 2 here). In my home town a new city hall is just opening this month. Personally, I think it is a fantastic building as it will improve the downtown core, be a new space for the city library, and help incorporate the old Welland Canal into the downtown landscape. Over the past five years selections of the population are greatly against the building simply because it came out of the txpayers money. Even though this building improves the downtown, people still find reason to complain.
