If you thought Requiem for a Dream was just another druggie movie, you missed the point :\.
It's not JUST about drugs. It's about addictions in general and what they do to people.

Has anyone actually figured out what Donnie Darko is all about yet?
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

Wow, that in depth answer explains everything. Holy Jesus, that was deep.
Now let's not give retarded answers and try to be a tad bit more in depth. Thanks.

But not all of their addictions were DRUG ADDICTIONS.
Sarah Goldfarb was addicted to TV as well... I mean...the message of the movie wasn't "DON'T DO DRUGS. THIS'S WHAT HAPPENS."
BUT. Think what you like

Didn't know you were looking for an explaination. Just thought you were challenging people to figure it out.
It's about the nature of time and space. It's about Donnie's discovery of the way of the universe. Donnie (for whatever reason) is chosen to find out how things work. He finds out that time travel is actually possible, in a way. He discovers that using wormholes (the votex-like thing at the end), he can travel to a parallel universe (or simply back in time ... didn't give much explaination there).
Among other things that happen to Donnie along the way, he falls in love, and then sees the one he loves die [as well as his family dying in the plane as it was wrecked in the wormhole]. This is where he makes the big choice. He is sent back in time, to the night the house was hit by the plane engine [which happens to be the engine from the plane his parents were in, coming through the wormhole]. He has to choose whether he wants to continue with his life without the girl he loves (and, he'd have to go through everything again, watching her die. it's not possible to change the course of events) or to stay in his room that night and die, letting everyone else live.
Frank is like his guide through all this. It's Frank who brings him out of the house so he'll live. It's Frank who helps to explain what's going on. Frank helps mold the course of events that will lead to Donnie's decision.

Yeah, I understood all of that, but there's so much more to the movie that perplexes me. I don't know, I guess I'll never really understand what is going on with that movie, except for it's probably the best movie I've seen ever (that isn't a comedy).

Yeah, there's definately more to the movie. A lot of small things thrown in everywhere.
It's one of the best movies I've ever seen, too.
OLP has given me a lot of bests. Best band (excluding Gravity, of course), best book (AOSM) and best movie (Donnie Darko). Okay, so that's just three. But that's still a lot from one source.
