So...I've had my HDTV for months now.

Been running my xbox 360 at 480p; which is HD, but not great.

I just now.....just NOW.....realized my TV was capable of running 1080i.

So now.....my 360 is running in all its 1080i glory. I got goosebumps.

HDMI is necessary for the PS3 to output an HD signal, otherise everything is still in SD (with the standard component cable)

Isn't it the same with the 360?

nope actually that's incorrect, the PS3 and 360 can both use both the Component cables (separates the video signal into the three different colour channels (Red, Green and Blue) into three different cords, one for each channel. HDMI is a single cord that transfers not only the video signal, but the audio signal as well. Both of these cords are capable of all resolutions of High Defintion output up to 1080P(HDMI, especially HDMI 1.3 can support higher resolutions that are less common, but only incorporated into computer display use). The difference is, that component cords don't support audio, they're specifically video cords.

The cord that doesn't support high definition is the composite video cord. That's the single YELLOW covered connector that usually comes with the two audio cords which are RED AND WHITE. More commonly the set is referred to as RCA cords or plugs.

Wait, I used the wrong word.

By component cable I actually meant the RCA cords. So yeah, I needs me the HDMI.

Honestly, I'm not sure. I think when I went to first change the setting; my 360 was stopping on 480p as far as working. I think I was smoking something that day.

I just noticed on the corner of my TV it says HDTV 1080i and I was like "what the fuck!!!??" so I turns on my 360 and switch the setting.

Works amazingly. I feel like I missed out. Odd that I can even notice the subtle differences.

yeah you'll be able to notice even minor things from standard def to high def. One of my friends was a moron, he bought an HDTV to use with his 360 and I told him "Be sure to switch your settings in the dashboard and to change the switch on the component cord to HDTV." So after like a month, I asked him if he switched it to HDTV on his cord, and even a month after that, he still said he didn't see what was so great about high def gaming, so I asked him again. Finally I went to his house and looked at his cord and it was set on the standard def setting so I changed it and told him to turn on gears. He was blown away. He tried to say he didn't know what I was talking about when telling him to change the switch to HDTV, yet he told me twice that he'd already done that!

Ahh, well yeah standard composite looks VERY ugly compared to hight def. Even with the Wii, the standard video is ugly compared to the component capabilities of 480p.

1080i TVs are nice... most of the HDTVs around are 720p. The HDMI cable is your best way to connect devices to your TV. Composite cables (RCA cables), s-video, and component (YPbPr) cables all carry analog signals, I believe, so the image and sound will end up with some noise. The HDMI cable will keep the picture and sound digital all the way to your TV and give the best results.

Actually, there is both analog component video and digital component video, however analog is the standard and digital will probably not become a standard with HDMI quickly becoming the connection of choice because it's an all in one digital cord for video and audio that provides uncompressed quality.

As you said 720p is the current common resolution of most High Def tvs. However, that's actually a statistic of most high def TVs currently owned. More recent models available for purchase are a minimum of 1080i. The HDMI cable is the best for connecting devices to your tv if these devices were developed within the last two years or so. Most TVs, DVD players, video cameras, audio equipment etc... that is older than 2 years probably won't have HDMI inputs. The technology was created in I believe 2003, but most companies didn't jump on board to include the feature at first because it was an extra cost of including it and the chance that it wouldn't become an adopted standard.

Soooo, if you have an HDTV, DVD player etc... from 2004 or older, chances are (with the exception of higher end models from 2004) that your stuff won't have an HDMI connection, so component would then be your best choice.

that oddly reminded me of homer in that it seems like your friend heard/read what you said (depending on where/how the convo took place) and then kinda forgot or figured you were "full of it" and ignored it
or he could be like my bro and heard, understood fully then forgot said convo took place 2 mins later and stuff... cept with my bro he makes up convos that never took place... ie. telling me he was gonna take bio when he got back to school for the fall term 3 months ago and i either didnt understand a word he said (the sound quailty isnt always great) or he thought he had said convo but didnt

either way tho.. ive had many experiences of the nature of your story and i thought of homer.
go fuck yourself.
